Statewide non-profit advocacy organization, Preserve Rhode Island, and Rhode Island’s state historic preservation office, the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission, awarded three MHA Boston projects, The Dirt Palace (Dirt Palace Public Projects), Pontiac Mills (Union Mill LLC), and Prospect Heights (Winn Development & Omni Development), with 2021 Rhody Historic Preservation Project Awards this fall. The awards honor projects that protect Rhode Island’s historic character and sense of place.


The Dirt Palace | Providence, RI

2021 Historic Preservation Project (Rhody) Award

Providence’s long-vacant Kendrick-Prentice-Tirocchi House (c. 1867), a.k.a. the iconic Wedding Cake House, has been rehabilitated and adapted into a facility for artists in residence by Dirt Palace Public Projects.

Pontiac Mills | Warwick, RI

2021 Historic Preservation Project (Rhody) Award

Warwick’s Pontiac Mills (c. 1863) has been rehabilitated into a mixed-use development by Union Mill LLC. The mill complex—a former brownfield site—is now a thriving community of homes and businesses.

Prospect Heights | Pawtucket, RI

2021 Historic Preservation Project (Rhody) Award

Pawtucket’s Prospect Heights Housing (c. 1941-42) has been rehabilitated and brought up to 2021 living standards by Winn Development and Omni Development.
